Brain Pickings

Every once in awhile you come across a blog or web site that is so fantastic that you want to shout to the roof tops:

“You gotta see this!”

For me that would be Brain Pickings. The name may be a bit off-putting if one is squeamish but, trust me, this blog is filled with all sorts of information and insight by which creative types will be inspired. You gotta see this!!!

Maria Popova’s blog “Brain Pickings” fits that description and then some.

She says about her blog:

“The core ethos behind Brain Pickings is that creativity is a combinatorial force: it’s our ability to tap into our mental pool of resources — knowledge, insight, information, inspiration, and all the fragments populating our minds — that we’ve accumulated over the years just by being present and alive and awake to the world, and to combine them in extraordinary new ways. In order for us to truly create and contribute to the world, we have to be able to connect countless dots, to cross-pollinate ideas from a wealth of disciplines, to combine and recombine these pieces and build new ideas.”

The articles include information and supporting graphics to creatively communicate ideas and knowledge to the reader. Here’s one about writers and sleep patterns and the impact on literary productivity. Be sure to look at the supporting infographics which help to illustrate how sleep patterns may impact writing over time. Perhaps this might help understand writer’s block?
